Exploring America: RV Travel and the Books that Inspire Us

As we crisscross America in our RVs, I often find myself curious about the books that accompany us on these travel journeys. Do the stories we immerse ourselves in somehow reflect the landscapes we explore? I’d love to start a conversation about how our reading choices and favorite destinations intertwine, making our RV travels even more enriching.

What Are Your Favorite Books from the Last Couple of Years?

I’ve narrowed my current non-fiction list down to these impactful reads:

  1. "The Comfort Crisis" by Michael Easter

  • How does pushing beyond our comfort zones in reading inspire our physical journeys?

  1. "Outlive" by Peter Attia

  • Does a focus on longevity and health influence the way we choose our travel destinations?

  1. "The Gift" by Edith Eger

  • How does reading about resilience and overcoming adversity shape our experiences on the road?

For fiction, I gravitate towards:

  • Historical Fiction: These novels transport me to different eras and enrich my understanding of history.

  • Political Thrillers: The fast-paced, intense narratives keep my mind sharp.

  • Gripping Tales of Survival and Preparation: Stories of endurance inspire me to be prepared and resilient, much like our RV journeys.

Favorite Destinations

Here are some places that have left a lasting impression on me over the last couple of years:

  1. Mojave Desert: The vast, rugged beauty offers a perfect backdrop for introspective reading.

  2. Rugged Coastlines of Northern California, Oregon, and Maine: The stunning coastal scenery is ideal for relaxing with a good book.

  3. Southwest Canyonlands: The dramatic landscapes provide endless inspiration for adventure and reflection.

Is There a Connection Between Our RVing and Reading Choices?

I wonder, do the books we choose to read reflect our travel destinations, or do our travel experiences influence our reading preferences? Do you find yourself picking up a survival thriller before heading into the wilderness? Or perhaps a historical novel when exploring an ancient landscape? Is there a leaning toward fiction or non-fiction among us RVers?

How Do You Prefer to Read?

For me, it’s all about convenience and minimizing clutter:

  • Kindle: Perfect for having a wide selection without the bulk.

  • Audible: Great for listening while driving or hiking.

  • Physical Books: Sometimes, nothing beats the feel of a real book.

Your Turn

I’d love to hear from you. What’s on your reading list? How do you prefer to read, and what destinations inspire you the most? Let’s share our favorites and see if we can discover new sources of inspiration for our journeys, both on the road and in our minds.
