Acadia National Park: Our Way to Enjoy Beyond the Crowds

Is it summer yet? No, but I think we are all starting to make our plans. That's perfect because many popular destinations are crowded and require passes, tickets, timed entries, reservations, etc. That is undoubtedly true for Acadia National Park. An excellent resource for US National destinations is Recreation.gov; here you'll see that Cadillac Summit Road (famous for spectacular views) requires a timed entry vehicle permit.

The site also provides information on park camping, points of interest, and popular park activities; you can check availability and make reservations. There are restrictions on how early you can make your reservations, too, so pend the date on your calendar and set a reminder for the best chance of making a reservation that aligns with your travel dates.

Acadia National Park

Acadia stands out as a gem in a world filled with breathtaking national parks, but its popularity can sometimes be overwhelming. The summer influx of nature enthusiasts can turn the serene landscapes into bustling thoroughfares. However, there's a secret to savoring a national beauty without the crowds – it involves dreaming big, setting ambitious goals, and embracing the challenge.

Our love for national parks fueled our desire to experience Acadia in a unique way, away from the hordes of tourists. Armed with determination, we decided to plan our adventure six months in advance. We knew that by opting for moderate to strenuous hikes, we'd escape the crowds and challenge ourselves in the most rewarding way possible.

To embark on this journey, we turned to AllTrails.com, a reliable companion for hikers, walkers, bikers, kayakers, and 4x4 off-roaders. The site provides valuable insights into routes along with visitors' reviews and first-hand accounts, helping us select paths that promise adventure and solitude. With our sights set on the less-traveled routes within Acadia, we eagerly started our journey of preparation and transformation.

Training became the cornerstone of our mission to conquer Acadia differently. We began with a commitment to walking every day, gradually increasing our speed. Starting with a modest single mile, we pushed ourselves until we could effortlessly cover six miles plus, laying the foundation for the challenges ahead. But we didn't stop there; we incorporated elevation into our routine, ensuring our bodies were prepared for the undulating terrains of Acadia's trails.

Our training routine became a ritual – five to six days a week; we immersed ourselves in the discipline of walking and hiking. It was a commitment that required sacrifice and dedication, but the payoff was nothing short of magical. As the weeks passed, we felt the transformation – physically and mentally ready for the adventure awaited us.

One of the trail we chose was aptly named "Six Summits," a moniker that hinted at the challenge ahead. We knew it wouldn't be a walk in the park – pun intended. The reality hit hard, and we managed to conquer five summits. It was undoubtedly an ass-kicking experience, but therein lay the beauty of it all. The challenge pushed us beyond our limits, proving that the rewards are often commensurate with the effort invested.

The true victory, however, was in the sparse encounters we had along the way. Passing fewer than a dozen fellow hikers, we reveled in the solitude of Acadia's wild beauty. The usual buzz of crowds was replaced by the serenity of nature, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the park's untamed allure.

For those seeking to experience crowded national parks in an entirely new light, the key is to veer off the beaten path. Dreaming, planning, and preparing are the essential steps that pave the way. The journey becomes not just about the destination but about the strength you discover within yourself.

In the pursuit of goals, it's crucial to be audacious. If your aspirations don't instill a hint of fear, they might not be grand enough. Acadia taught us that we can redefine our experiences in even the most popular destinations by dreaming big, planning meticulously, and embracing challenges.

So, if you're yearning for a new perspective, a different trail, and a stronger version of yourself, National gems are beckoning. They are not just national parks; they’re a canvas for your aspirations. Dream beyond the ordinary, set goals that challenge you, and embark on a journey that promises the beauty of nature and self-discovery.
