Appliance Wrestling: Our Knockdown, Drag-out Battle with an RV Washer-Dryer!
It's Lynette here. Today, I'm taking you through the wash, wringing and grueling cycles of replacing our motorhome's stacking washer-dryer.
The Spin Cycle of Doom
The washer in our motorhome suddenly refused to drain or spin. First instinct? Try it a few more times and see if it will fix it's self. Then Google, of course! After troubleshooting online, my hubs, Tim, disassembled the stacked unit to pull them out of its 27" closet after removing the cabinet doors. We relocated the dryer to our tiny RV bedroom – talk about an unwelcome roommate!
Then came the washer. Out it came, and my hubs, Tim, disassembled it with a mix of curiosity and dread. Inside, we found a treasure trove – well, if you count $3 in loose change and a rogue dryer sheet clogging the drain as treasure. Feeling optimistic, he reassembled it. We crossed our fingers, but it still wouldn't drain or spin.
Further detective work and all other troubleshooting pointed to the need to replace the unit. Ouch!
Shopping Spree with a Twist
Off to the appliance stores and online we went. After a couple of days of shopping, we had only two models that could squeeze into our 27" opening. After a drive that felt longer than a "Lord of the Rings" movie, we picked our new contenders. It's funny how manufacturers "pair" the stackables. Ultimately, we had to buy a matched pair—because, in the world of appliances, it seems it's all or nothing!
The Homecoming Battle
I had yet to anticipate the herculean task of wrestling the used units out the RV door, and then muscling the new ones inside. It turned into a full-blown contact sport. There we were, bruised and battered – thank goodness for our gym memberships! It was awkward, heavy, and did I mention heavy?
Hooking up the dryer vent was another epic saga. I found myself hanging my rear quarters out of the emergency escape door, trying to squeeze into the tiniest space to reach and connect the vent hose. At the same time, my better half held the unit before sliding it onto the washer. It was like playing a high-stakes game of Twister but with appliances.
With some grunts, sweat, and a few choice words, we slid the units into place and secured them with stack-locking brackets. Finally, the beasts were tamed and in their new home.
Living with a Dryer in the Bedroom
For a few days, our bedroom felt like an obstacle course from one of those reality TV shows. Dodging a dryer just to get to the bureau adds new excitement to your morning routine!
Was It Worth It?
Here's the million-dollar question: was all this hassle worth it? Financially, absolutely. We saved around $2,000 by doing it ourselves. But let me tell you, it was way more complicated and physically challenging than anticipated. If you're thinking of doing this yourself, here are a few nuggets of wisdom:
Be Prepared for a Workout: It's not just about lifting; it's about strategizing. Every move counts when you're maneuvering heavy appliances in tight spaces.
Measure Everything: The closet space, doors, and other passageways these behemoths need to pass through.
Have the Right Tools: From pliers to Allen wrenches, ensure you have the tools and the know-how.
Patience Is Key: This isn't a sprint; it's a marathon. Take breaks, keep hydrated, and keep your sense of humor handy.
Safety First: Bruises and cuts might be badges of honor, but always be mindful of your limits and safety.
Playing It Forward
Replacing our RV's washer-dryer was an actual test of our DIY skills and patience. We would do it again to save money but acknowledge that it's not for everyone.
So, to all brave souls ready to tackle your RV repairs: Yes, it's tough. Yes, it's frustrating. But you'll likely learn much about your RV (and maybe your partner, too!). They say, "There's nothing like the satisfaction of solving a problem on your own." To that, I say, "Meh, I prefer stuff to be made like in the old days to last forever."
Until next time, keep rolling and keep tinkering! RVing Ritchie, I'm signing off—it's time to tackle the next adventure (after I do a load of laundry, that is).
