Why I Wrote *Idled Too Long*: A Re-Engaging Health and RV Adventure
The allure of retirement was drawing closer, and like many, I found myself attending a retirement planning seminar. The focus, of course, was on financing retirement and preparing for the expenses that inevitably come with aging—especially those related to health. As I
stood there, indulging in the morning pastries and coffee being served, something struck me. The statistics presented about the illnesses we could expect due to our diets and inactivity were alarming. Then, as I squeezed back into the theater seating after the break, I noticed that many of us, including the heavy-set presenter, were all in the same boat—literally and figuratively.
At that moment, a thought hit me: What if I could do more than save for those inevitable expenses? What if I could change the odds entirely? That day, the idea was cinched—much like the seat belt I struggled to fasten (more on that in the book)—and I launched my personal campaign to change my life. *Idled Too Long* was born out of this realization, a testament to the belief that preparation for retirement is not just about finances but also about fighting back against the expected decline in health.
The Turning Point
The inspiration for *Idled Too Long* came from a series of wake-up calls and a call to action by a couple of personal trainers you'll meet in *Idled Too Long*. My husband and I, in our late 50s and 40s, respectively, realized that being overweight and out of shape wasn't just affecting our lives—it was dictating them. Simple activities were becoming more arduous, and many of the joys of living were compromised. We knew something had to change.
This realization coincided with a long-held dream of exploring the country by RV. As we began to take steps toward better health, I noticed parallels between maintaining an RV and maintaining my body. Just as an RV needs regular care, attention, and the right fuel to function optimally, so does our health. The metaphor became the foundation for the book—a guide not only to healthier living but to a more fulfilling life on the road.
The Writing Journey
Writing *Idled Too Long* was an unexpected journey in itself. It was more than just a commitment to our health—it became a therapeutic process, a way to reflect on the changes we made a decade earlier and to solidify my continued resolve. Each chapter reminded me of the small steps that led to significant transformations, both in my body and my mindset.
Writing the book kept me accountable for our health goals. It was a way to share our story, but more importantly, it was an opportunity to hopefully inspire others. My desire is that Idled Too Long will show readers that it's never too late to make a change and that even the smallest steps can lead to big improvements.
*Idled Too Long* is more than just a health journey—it's about rediscovering vitality. It's for anyone who feels they've been "idling too long" in the fitness of life, whether it's health, adventure, or simply finding a new passion.
